With fitness trends on the rise, our generation is facing more body image challenges than ever. What if something your facing is medical related and not the diet you are struggling with. Gynecomastia surgery is a unique surgery to mostly males. It can be life changing and boost a patient’s self-confidence.

Gynecomastia  is referred to as excessive breast tissue and fat in the pectoral area. Most men that are interested in the surgery are in the younger range from 18-37. After the surgery is performed most patients are left with a naturally contoured chest with a low risk of recurrence.

Consultation: What to expect

The first step is consulting with the right plastic or cosmetic surgeon. When consulting the physician may ask you a series of questions to determine the right steps for removal. Not all patients require excision of the excess breast tissue, it may require Liposuction technique due to only extra fatty tissue. After the series of questions by the physician the next step is inquire why the patient wants it removed. Most young men are body building and seek surgery to help them achieve their goal appearance.

Did you do your research?

Depending on the type of gynecomastia surgery your physician recommends for you, is where your knowledge of the plastic surgeon comes into play. When removing the breast tissue by excisional method or liposuction technique, the surgeon most remove enough but not too deep or the patient will be left with a sunken appearance or “crater down” look. Choosing the right surgeon, by asking questions and reviewing his before and after pictures is the key to a right choice. Always check your physicians credentialing as well. Many medical doctors will tell you if asked.

Will I scar bad?

Most patients biggest worry is the scar. Gynecomastia surgery has very minimal scarring. Dr. Shienbaum makes a tiny incision in the lower part of the areola. By placing the scar in the junction of where the skin meets the areola it heels exceptionally well. Depending of the severity of the gynecomastia some patients may not be good candidates because their skin may not have good laxity. Upon consultation, make sure you and your surgeon agree of what you expect of the outcome, not everyone heels the same.

Can it ever reoccur?

Generally, the reoccurrence of the fatty tissue does not reoccur, unless the patient gains a significant amount of weight over the years. Although it is removed, a good physician always reminds patients that aging is of course natural and gravity takes effect at some point. Most patients have a great outcome and would recommend the surgery to any male who is struggling with the feeling of large breast/chest.

After surgery, it is recommended to wear a tight undergarment “muscle shirt” to adhere the skin to the muscle. It lowers the chance of the skin filling with fluid where the excess fat and tissue was removed.

Gynecomastia surgery gives young adults and even mature adults their confidence back to hit the gym, finally reach their body builders goals, or simply to make them feel at ease shirtless again.
