Things to know before your first Liposuction Consultation…

liposuctionHave you recently inquired about having Liposuction of certain problem areas of fat you just cannot seem to get rid of?

Be prepared for your consultation with these tips from Dr. Shienbaum at Brandon Plastic Surgery in Tampa, FL.

During your first consultation make sure to discuss your surgical goals, how you expect to look; is it a realistic expectation? Will the type of Liposuction you have require any medical clearance if you have certain types of medical conditions? What kind of drugs are involved and do you have any allergies, if so what does the surgeon recommend instead? If you are currently taking any supplements, vitamins, diet pills, etc. (even over the counter) be sure to ask if you can continue to take them before your surgery. If you have had any previous surgeries (even unrelated to cosmetic) tell your surgeon. Be as upfront with your surgeon, so they may give you the best evaluation and expectations possible.

You should expect your Liposuction plastic surgeon to evaluate you on your overall general health. They should inquire and ask if you have any pre-existing health conditions or any risk factors. The surgeon will most likely take photographs and discuss which type of Liposuction will benefit you and give you your desired expectation. Depending on the type of Liposuction what is their recommended course of treatment. Do they require any follow up appointments, or to purchase any equipment to ease your recovery.

Finally, your surgeon and you should discuss ANY potential outcomes for Liposuction surgery and any complications that can arise from type of Liposuction.

It is recommended to write a list of questions down to ask your surgeon so that you have a full understanding of all aspects of Liposuction surgery. Naturally you will feel anxious whether you are excited and anticipating your new look, stress is normal with this type of surgery, but the more questions and better understanding you have going into it, can help you achieve your best result and can help you choose the right Plastic Surgeon for you. If you would like to book a consultation with Dr. Marvin Shienbaum in a no stress environment to learn about all of the problem areas that can get addressed with liposuction along with other cosmetic surgery procedures we encourage you to call today: (813) 681-5709

The Latest Breast Implant Trend

breast-implantsWith new fashions trends society is always changing to keep up with the latest and greatest! For plastic surgery, this can be true as well. With all the new hype over butt, boobs, and tummies. Things are constantly changing on sizes, shapes, and what the patient most desires. Breast implants over the past twenty years have had an impact with the newest trends as well, as far as sizes!

Dr. Shienbaum’s patients from some years ago were known for fitting in with culture of the time as “Go BIG or go home”. It was very popular in the 80’s to have large prized breast, and some women still desire that look, but as time has changed and things have evolved over the years, new trends are taking effect. Many patients are now coming back for a more “natural” appearance. A patient of Dr. Shienbaum shares, “When I first got my implants, I wanted to conform with the latest trends, but now with age I just want to be natural and feel myself again.” Many women are noted downsizing or completely removing their implants with plastic surgeons in the 20th century. Dr. Shienbaum’s patient is part of the growing trend of women opting for a breast explant surgery. In recent magazines, they noted the red carpets have been lacking some cleavage over the past couple of years.

More plastic surgeons reported performing Breast Explant or exchanges than ever. The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery started tracking the procedures just last year recording more than 38,000 procedures. Most patients replace their current implants with smaller while some prefer to have them taken out altogether. The majority of these patients have had their implants for decades.

If your deciding on any type of surgery Dr. Shienbaum highly recommends you thoroughly think about your decision to make sure it is right one for you and your body no matter the trend currently. Always discuss with your plastic surgeon any questions or concerns you may have about any and all procedures you are inquiring.

Breast Implant Choices and Differences

breast-augmentationSaline Breast Implants
Saline Breast Implants are filled with sterile salt water or “saline”. Saline implants have the highest rate of rupturing. If the shell of the implant should leak the whole implant will collapse. Saline is considered the safest option due to your body absorbing the saline if it ruptures or leaks. Saline implants are FDA approved for women ages 18 and up.

Silicone Breast Implants
Silicone Breast Implants are filled with silicone gel. The gel tends to feel more natural as normal breast tissue would. If rupture was to happen or the implant shell was to leak, the silicone gel would remain within the implant or may escape into the breast implant pocket. (The space your surgeon makes to encase your implants). If silicone is your desired implant, it is recommended to follow up regularly with your Plastic Surgeon to make sure the implants are functioning correctly. These implants are FDA approved for women ages 22 and up.

Gummy Bear Implants
Gummy Bear Implants or “form-stable” implants are firmer than silicone and saline. They are a littler thicker and are less likely to break or rupture. They are tapered at the top and more projection at the bottom. One downfall is if the implant was to rotate, it could lead to unusual appearance of the breast.

Round Breast Implants
Round Breast Implants appear fuller than the Gummy Bear Implants. High profile round breast implants are an ideal choice if you want them to have more projection. Due to them being round all over there is less of a concern about them rotating out of place.

Smooth Breast Implants
Smooth Breast Implants are the softest feeling, they have the most natural movement because they are able to move with the breast implant pocket. The downfall is they have more palpable or visible rippling.

Textured Breast Implants
Textured Breast Implants are harder because scar tissue forms around and sticks to the implant. They are less likely to move around inside of the breast and get repositioned. It does however reduce the likeliness of developing a tight scar capsule.
After deciding on the perfect implant for you with your Plastic Surgeon, it is always important to follow-up with the PS to have appropriate check-ups.

Is there ever a “Right Time” for Plastic Surgery?

plastic-surgerySummer is known for vacationing and spring for weather but what season is the best for a tuck, nip, or fill? Many women and men inquiring plastic or cosmetic surgery plan it around their already crazy schedule. Dr. Shienbaum of Brandon Plastic Surgery finds that a very popular question among his patients is, “When is the perfect time for Plastic Surgery?”

Dr. Shienbaum answers this question with “when may depend on where”. Many of his patients in St. Petersburg, FL would prefer to recover before swimsuit season or preferably not at the hottest time of year, while others would prefer to take some time off during the holidays. Busy time for his practice is considerably is all year, because everyone’s schedule differs. Some people fly down just to have surgery and it’s their winter we may be in the middle of summer. Location has a lot to do with choosing the perfect time for a procedure.

The type of surgery can affect the time for surgery as well. If you’re just receiving a non-invasive, in-office procedure such as Botox, any time can work given the simplicity of the injection. There is no down time, most of our patients go right back to work, or continue their everyday activities. Botox is known to help minimize the appearance of wrinkles.

If you are considering something more in-depth, such as a Tummy Tuck, Breast Augmentation, or Facelift deciding what time to head to Dr. Shienbaum may be important. Some find it easier to take time away during the holidays to recover, or some may differently. All this can be discussed with your surgeon and he can give you the appropriate amount of recovery suggested for each procedure.

How to choose the right Brazilian Butt Lift Surgeon

Upon your research of your recent inquire of a buttock augmentation you should always consider these questions about the Plastic Surgeon while looking. Are they certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery? Were they specifically trained in the field of cosmetic or plastic surgery and if so how many years of training did they have in that specific field. Does the surgeon have hospital privileges to perform his surgeries, if so what hospitals? If the office has an in house surgical facility is it accredited by a nationally or state recognized agency? These are things you can look up on the internet or ask the surgeon upon your consultation.

Are you a good candidate for this procedure? Ask the surgeon if this is right for you, and his opinion. Remember they do these EVERYDAY. His/her job is to evaluate your insecurities and address them. Be sure to ask if what is expected of yourself to receive the best possible results. Should you be working out, clean diet, etc.?

ALWAYS ask where and how will he/she be performing your procedure, and what surgical technique is he/she recommending for you. Each surgeon performs the same procedure but may utilize different techniques. Make sure you have a clear understanding of what methods of liposuction they use and how they reinject fat.

Recovery always depends on your body but it’s always good to ask general questions. How long of a recovery should you expect, and might you need anything special for recovery? Do they recommend having any help during recovery? Every surgeon has a different protocol for how to handle recovery, by asking it can help determine if it fits best with you, your healing style, and your schedule. Keep in mind, many surgeons require you to have post-operative follow ups to stay updated throughout your recovery.

Surgical complications are rare but they can and do happen. Discuss with your Plastic Surgeon all the risk and complications associated with your procedure and if a complication does arise how do they handle them. Be honest about your medical history and through in your discussion whether this surgery is safe and right for you.

Lastly, how can you expect to look overtime? Are the results immediate? Generally swelling is apparent with this type of surgery and your immediate results can differ from patient to patient. Talk to your surgeon and explain how you expect to look, if it is possible. Always ask if you are unsatisfied following the procedure, do you have options? Most importantly remember surgery is usually permanent, be sure to have a good understanding of the surgery and what to expect.

Deciding on a Breast Augmentation?

Size matters…

Double Board Certified St. Pete Plastic Surgeon, Dr. Shienbaum says one of the most common reasons women have a breast revision surgery is to change size. He offers his advice by spending your time and selecting the right size the first time around can save you revision surgery costs and avoid recovery time. Dr. Shienbaum explains, “We have to pick an implant that fits their breast.” Dr. Shienbaum has performed thousands of Breast surgeries throughout the Clearwater area and with through implant size selection makes the difference between an okay breast augmentation and a great breast augmentation.

Double check…

Upon a Breast Consultation with Dr. Shienbaum the first step is measuring the patient’s chest. Determining their chest measurements establish what diameter and type of implant would give the patient the most desired results they are seeking.  When he measures your breast, he is including the base width of the breast and the nipple to fold distance. Based upon the dimensions he is able to give his patients an idea of what size implants he would recommend for their body. Upon selection of an implant size, he looks at the bony or skeletal structure of his patient to determine if is a proportionate size. He explains that as the patient may gain or loss weight, their bony structure will always remain the same.

Bra sizers…

Have you ever stuffed your bra? Tissue paper was a little girl’s best friend back in her younger years! Every girl wonders what will I look like with bigger boobs. No worries, Dr. Shienbaum offers real life implant sizers for a realistic experience of weight, projection, and appearance for women seeking Breast Augmentation. When you try on your implant sizers, he encourages you to bring some of your favorite shirts to visualize your expected outcome. While trying the implant sizers on, if you are athletic, take note of the new weight added to your body. Are you ok with the way they accent your physique and are they proportionate for you? These are some things Dr. Shienbaum reassures you and ensures will help you choose the right size. He prefers you to try the sizers and see for yourself versus a 3-D virtual experience that some other Tampa surgeons prefer. Although of course the decision is ultimately up to you, he is there to give you his honest opinion in helping you choose the right size!

Butt Injections

All this new hype over “Butts” but how do they get them? A new poll shows that more than half of America is intrigued by popular reality stars Kim Kardashian, Amber Rose, and Blac Chyna- because of their butts! Each one of them is known for there over proportional backend, but the big question is, what are they doing to get them?

It seems like every time we turn around on Instagram someone’s butt has blown up, leaving us with the questions, are squats and protein shakes really contributing to their butts THAT much? We need their personal trainers in our life if so- they all have us curious how do all these perfect round rumps appear overnight?

Are you eating your greens, and doing your squats? Is genetics on your side? With all the curiosity, butt conspiracy theorists started digging- surgical enhanced bottoms is the only logical explanation. The basic surgical procedure they found has practically no scarring so no one would really know if squats weren’t really contributing to what they’re sitting on. Just your luck we’ve done some digging ourselves, so whether you’re an interested fan, and curious cynic, or aspiring Instagram model your only one little nip and tuck away from your shot at glory! Here’s the facts behind the “behind”.

Double Board Certified Plastic and Cosmetic Surgeon Dr. Shienbaum of Brandon Plastic Surgery specializes in many cosmetic and surgical procedures/treatments. Dr. Shienbaum weighs in stating that “Butt Implants are not my style, or this seasons”.

Dr. Shienbaum feels that butt implants pose a higher risk for infection, cause uncomfortable pain when sitting, can turn causing an unnatural appearance, along with the long scar it requires to place the implant. So, if implants are out, what’s the new in? Fat grafting has gain popularity over the past 10+ years. Fat grafting is your own fat and it’s reinjected into your buttocks, aka butt injections. With butt injections, there’s virtually no scarring since it’s just placing a needle and injecting fat. It sounds so complicated, but Dr. Shienbaum assures us it’s fairly simple.

The surgery really only consists of two main parts; removing the fat of the desired areas, and injecting it into the buttocks. Dr. Shienbaum usually takes fat from the upper back, inner/outer thighs, waist line, and lower back. The key is to get enough volume to inject. It is then put into syringes, and the reinjected into the butt. Some surgeons have different methods of how to handle the fat. Some centrifuge it, some wash it. Dr. Shienbaum believes the minimal amount done is better because fat is easy to injure and could be less likely to live. When he injects he creates a rounder and more voluptuous tush. With fat injecting Dr. Shienbaum is able to shape and re define your waist and buttocks by contouring a more musculature behind.

The recovery time is about 3-4 days, a week at the longest. Crazy to think that in just 3-10 days you could have yourself a brand “spanking” new rear. Unfortunately, most are pretty sore after the surgery (workout soreness, like you really did do those 100 squats) and swelling does occur. The swelling is the last thing to resolve, it takes about 6 months for swelling to COMPLETELY disappear. Of course, you anticipate the first week to be very swollen, by the second week a little less and it gradually goes down.

With swim suit season at an end, butt injection season is in full swing, to acquire a free consultation with Dr. Shienbaum, please call (813) 681-5709.

Natural Facial Filler: Is there such a thing?

Great news ladies and men! With our society focusing more and more on appearance they now have a natural way to ease your facial aging process!

Regardless of shape, weight, or body size, we ALL have fat cells. When many hear fat it is automatically the enemy, unless you are Dr. Shienbaum. Plastic Surgeons all over the globe are utilizing fat more and more throughout the body! Double Board Certified Plastic Surgeon Dr. Shienbaum considers fat as his friend. “I see fat as my friend, it carries more than just volume, it carries your natural tissues, and stem cells.” Dr. Shienbaum of Brandon Plastic Surgery uses fat in almost every facial enhancement surgery. “Fat is gold to me, I am able to contour and shape with the most natural filler”, states Dr. Shienbaum. He uses it to elevate the caved, sunken appearance of the malar or cheek regions to give you “apple” cheek bones. It restores the fullness to your aging cheeks.

Placement is the key to receiving the best results. Depending on where the fat is placed has a huge deciding factor on how long it stays. Like any other type of graft, in order to be stable it requires a blood supply. The more something moves the more it dissipates and goes away. Therefore, Lips are possible to fat graft to but sometimes not recommended because our lips are the most animated part of our bodies. To achieve the best results, Dr. Sheinbaum recommends the fat to be inserted into the cheeks to re contour and lift the skin giving you a sleek jawline, and eliminating those annoying bags under your eyes.

On average, about 50% of fat grafted injected fat remains living and permanent in the facial region. With that Dr. Shienbaum often gets asked, “If only half of my fat is expected to remain, can we overfill and achieve a longer and better result.” He always answers no to this questions because the face naturally has very small compartments of fat in the face. You can only insert the fat into certain small areas. It’s always best to remain conservative, and achieve what looks good. Dr. Sheinbaum reassures his patients that a drop of fat is all that’s needed to correct even the droopiest of baggy under eyes. It is always best to assume that on average, yes 50% of fat remains, but in any given case all of the fat injected could live and remain permanent, so it’s better to stay conservative and not overfill.

While many still remain very negative about fat, everyone loves the idea of a younger appearance. Dr. Shienbaum always asks patients if they would like a younger appearance with any given liposuction procedure. He always fully discusses how he is going to remove the fat to where he might add it based on the patient’s desires.

Later Life Breast Enhancement Options

Weight gain or loss, breast feeding, pregnancy, genetics, and age can all affect a women’s body; especially their breast. It can sometimes cause breast to droop, sag, or loose volume. A women can feel depressed, unattractive, and older quite possibly even affect the clothes she might wear. Dr. Shienbaum of Brandon Plastic Surgery offers several different Breast procedures with minimal down time and exceptional results.

 Natural Fat Transfer Breast Enlargement

Not all women require implants to give them the desired look they would like, Dr. Shienbaum utilizes a state of the art technique called fat transfer. Patients have the option to use their own fat cells to give the desired extra breast volume instead of an implant. Fat transfer can be used to augment the breast by Liposuction of fat from a desired area Dr. Shienbaum and you decide on. Many patients report having “pre pregnancy” breast fullness. Although he cannot guarantee that outcome he can always try to help you achieve it.

 Breast Lift

Many women have drooping, saggy breast due to aging or life events (pregnancy, sports, unsupportive bras). Dr. Shienbaum will consult with you the benefit of having a Breast Lift or Mastopexy if your breast sag significantly. There are many different ways to perform a Breast Lift, with minimal scarring. When you consult with Dr. Shienbaum he will discuss the types of incision he would prefer to enhance your “deflated” appearance.

 Breast Lift with Implants

Patients often inquire about implants with a Breast Lift to give them extra volume. Dr. Shienbaum will go over every aspect of how he can meticulous give you your desired aesthetic look. Other questions patients have is “If I just get Breast Implants, it will fix my drooping and sagging breast”. As great as that may sound, it cannot be done with everyone. If you look at your nipples and they point down, if you were to place implants within the breast, your nipples would still point down, therefore requiring a simple Breast Lift to accompany the procedure.

Breast enhancements have always been a desired top procedure at Brandon Plastic Surgery. The pros to a Breast Lift is restoring your youthful and perky feel to your now aging breasts. With Fat Transfer/re-injection it is your own tissue, and if a lift is needed the scarring is very minimal.
